Moles
APPEARANCE:
The two species of moles found in Wisconsin are about 7-8 inches long and stout. The star-nosed mole is dark grey to black in color while the prairie mole is silvery grey. They have large, flattened front feet with large claws that are used for digging tunnels.
HABITAT:
Moles typically don’t stay in the same place for a long time unless it can produce a large amount of insects for them to feed on.
DIET:
Moles can consume an amazing amount of food each day. They can eat 70-100% of their body weight. They primarily feed on insects such as beetle larvae, but they can eat anything from earthworms to spiders.
FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Mole damage usually occurs to your lawn in spring and fall when moles are actively looking for food beneath the grounds surface. A single mole can dig hundreds of feet of tunnels in a few days! Fortunately, we don't have mole problems in our surrounding counties of Waukesha, Washington, Ozaukee, and Milwaukee.
