Mosquito

APPEARANCE:
Mosquitoes belong to the family group of flies, which is known as Diptera. Although they belong to that group they differ from most due to the fact that they have elongated proboscis (in other words a tubular mouthpart), and scales on their wings.

HABITAT:
This varies depending on mosquito species. The most common in our state is aedes vexans which are typically found in roadside puddles, pools, river bottoms, etc.

DIET:
One fact that we often confuse about mosquitoes is that they feed on blood, but they don’t actually feed on blood they collect it in order to use its protein in developing eggs. Actually, most mosquitoes prefer birds and mammals to feed on rather than humans. You could have fooled me last summer though!!! Many mosquitoes actually feed on flower nectar and juices, they also can feed on decaying matter as well.

LIFE CYCLE/REPRODUCTION:
They typically breed during “wet years”. They survive the dry periods in the egg stage. Adults can migrate from anywhere’s from 5-20 miles from the initial breeding site. They only live about 3-4 weeks. One absolutely amazing fact about mosquitoes is that the egg can remain dormant for up to 5 years before flooding would have to cause a hatch!

TYPES OF DAMAGE/DISEASE:
Well, if you consider scratching and itching damage I think we all have seen what these gals can do. They can pass on West Nile Virus, La Crosse Encephalitis, and most commonly to your pets dog heartworm.
