Pharaoh Ant
APPEARANCE:
They are very small about 1/16-inch long. They have light yellow to red with black markings on their abdomens.
HABITAT:
They nest in household structures such as wall and cabinet voids, behind baseboards, behind refrigerator insulation, inside hollow curtain rods, or in the folds of sheets, clothes, or paper. They rely on artificial heating in buildings to survive. Infestations commonly occur in food service areas. They can also nest outdoors in lawns or gardens.
DIET:
They feed on both living and dead insects as well as sweets, fats and proteins.
LIFE CYCLE/REPRODUCTION:
The growth from egg to adult is about 45 days. Females live as long as 39 weeks and can lay about 400 eggs. Workers only live up to 10 weeks. The colony can contain up to 300,000 workers with multiple queens.
TYPES OF DAMAGE:
The most persistent and difficult of all commercially important ants to control. The colonies can be very large with up to several million workers and thousands of queens.
